HARTFORD CITY--Rosemary Hope Clamme Smith, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her son Jack's home at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday.
She was born in Upland to John H. Clamme and Bessie Ethel (Groves) Clamme. Both parents precede her in death. Rosemary graduated from Jefferson Township High School in 1935. She graduated in 1937 from Ft. Wayne International Business College.
She married Loren H. Smith on August 24, 1941 in Hartford City. He precedes her in death on February 17, 1989.
Rosemary retired from Hartford City Paper Company after five years of service. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and a Blackford County farmer where she was the co-owner of Smith Family Farms. Along with her husband, Loren H. Smith, Rosemary was active as a seller and breeder of registered Duroc hogs and both were active in the Eastern Indiana Livestock Breeders Association. Loren and Rosemary also raised Polled Shorthorn cattle.
She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in her younger years, where she was the past president and member of the Zion Lutheran Women and the past president of Church Women United. She was a lifelong honorary member past president of the Research Club and a member of the A.A.R.P. and former member of Eastern Star.
Rosemary will be sadly missed by her sons, James M. (wife-Barbara) Smith of Holland, MI, and Jack L. (wife-Sarah W.) Smith of Hartford City; daughter, Jalene Smith (friend-Heidi Gould) of Tenino, WA; grandchildren, Douglass (wife-Julie) Smith, Erik Smith, Heather (husband-Benjamin) Mack, Melinda Smith, Lori K. (husband-Mike) Musser, Amy M. Smith, Jonathon (wife-Dawn) Smith, Oren 'Ty' Smith, and Hannah M. Smith; great-grandchildren, Ellery Smith, Megan Smith, Claire Smith, Caleb Mack, Nathan Mack, Ashton Musser, Morgan Musser, Benjamin Musser, Quentin Smith, and Olivia Smith; daughter-in-law, Paula K. Smith of Hartford City; sister-in-law, Alta Smith of Hartford City; longtime friend of the family, Ole H. Fjeldstad of Kolbu, Norway; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Joseph R. Smith; brothers, Russell W. Clamme, Rowland H. Clamme, and John 'Raymond' Clamme; sisters-in-law, Lena Clamme, Martha Sue Clamme, and Gladys Clamme; and a grandson, Andrew Smith.
Funeral service for Rosemary will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 308 S. Monroe St., Hartford City, IN, with Rev. David Fleener officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Eaton, IN. Visitation will be from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St., Hartford City, and from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church.
