Mary Y. Lawrence, rural Roseville, Illinois, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Wesley Village Health Care Center, Macomb, Illinois.
She was born on May 24, 1917, near Roseville, a daughter of Maud Rhoades Young and Charles D. Young. She married Don R. Lawrence on August 30, 1939 at the Monmouth College president's home. They were farmers near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa for 30 years before moving to the Young farm near Roseville, Illinois in 1970. While raising five children, she attended Iowa Wesleyan College, majored in biology and graduated magna cum laude in 1963. From 1963 to 1970, Mary was a biology teacher at Mt. Pleasant High School. She was passionate about science, and early in her teaching in the public school, she defended to the local School Board her position on teaching evolution in her biology classes
She is survived by two sons, Rob (Carolyn) of rural Avon, Illinois and Ron (Jackie) of Danville, California; three daughters, Vicki (Wendell-deceased) Williams of Denton, Texas, Jann (Gene) Pollard of Charlotte, North Carolina and Lucinda (Bob) Hart of Champaign, Illinois; 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sister, Christine Asher.
Mary enjoyed long walks in their woods, planting trees, working crossword puzzles, entertaining her grandchildren, and reading scientific journals.

Donald R. Lawrence, 94, of Wesley Village, Macomb, IL, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb, IL.
He was born on February 7, 1916, near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Mark and Mildred (Montgomery) Lawrence. He was a graduate of Monmouth College, having attended on a football scholarship. He married Mary Young of Roseville on August 30, 1939 at the Monmouth College president's home. He was a farmer near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa for 30 years while raising and sending five children to college. In 1970 they moved to the Young farm near Roseville. He enjoyed watching sports, collecting coins, following the grain markets, and sharing fun with his family at the Lawrence family reunions.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Rob of rural Avon, Illinois and Ron of Danville, California; three daughters, Vicki Williams of Denton, Texas, Jann Pollard of Charlotte, North Carolina and Lucinda Hart of Champaign, Illinois; 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Caris. Don was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Vivian Barron.
