Lived at 86 E. Vermont - 1855-1860. He was a clerk, first with M.M Dunn's (1857), then J.A. Vinnedge(1858), the Boston Store (1860).

Formed Johnston Bros, at 62 E. Washington, in Indpls. when he and his brother Wm. J. Johnston bought out Mr. Munson of Munson and Johnston. They were a well known firm selling stoves and tinware for over 30 years with over $200,000 in sales in 1876. 'They brought themselves into prominence as reliable and progressive merchants and they built up a large and prosperous business.' (History of Greater Indianapolis)

Oldest member (in point of membership) of the First Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon. Sung in the choir there for 25 years. Member of the Scottish Rite Masons of the Mystic Shrine and the Knight Templars. For thirty years was the grand chancellor of Scottish Rite Masons of Indiana.

'He was noted for his general nature and had many friends ... He had been in failing health for some time, and his death was due to heart failure' (Indianapolis News, Mar 16, 1907) Lived at 2111 N. Delaware from the time of his marriage until his death.

In 1870, they had two servants Minnie STALKER age 19 and Annie Schnader age 14.

The Johnston brothers sold their home in 1879. In 1882 it became the residence for the Girls' Classical school
of Indianpolis, and later the Dental School of Indiana University.

ONE OF THE CITY'S OLDEST RESIDENTS PASSES AWAY

Samuel A. Johnston Succumbs to Illness

WAS A PROMINENT MASON

Samuel A. Johnston, for seventy-three years a resident of this city,
died at his home, 2111 North Delaware street, at
8 o'clock this morning. He had been in failing health
for some time, and his death was due to heart failure.
He was born at Franklin, this state, June 22, 1839 and
removed with his parents to Indianapolis when he was four years old.

For thirty years he was a member of the old firm of
Johnston Brothers, dealers in stoves and tinware, at
62 East Washington street.
For several years he had not been in actively engaged in any business.
At the time of his death he was the oldest in point of membership
of any member of the First Presbyterian Church,where he was a
deacon.
He had sang in the choir of that church for twenty-five years,
and until recent years was foremost in the activities of the church.
He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons of the Mystic Shrine
and the Knights Templars, and had been for thirty years the grand
chancellor of Scottish Rite Masons of Indiana. He was noted for his genial
nature, and had many friends.

He leaves a widow and two sons - William P. Johnston and
Dr. Samuel A. Johnston. Arrangements for the funeral have not been
completed. He will be buried at Crown Hill Cemetery
