In shipbuilding for 50 years, he built many ships on the Kennebunk,
Mousam and Webhannat Rivers. His first ship, 80 tons, was the first
build on the Kennebunk. At the launching day a heifer was roasted for
the many spectators from miles around.
The industry which was to make Kennebunk famous was also launched that
day. John had an iron will, once made up, but he was still mild
and gentle and loved children. In old age he climbed a tree for apples.
