Saturday, Jan 26, 2008, Jean Drake Vaughn of Birmingham went to be with the Lord and her loved ones who have gone before. Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years (Carroll), two sons (Allen and Stephen), and a daughter (Susan). She is survived by a brother Dr. Alan Drake (Evalyn) of Augusta, GA, a niece Christina (Ben) and grand niece (Eva) of Portland, OR, a nephew Bruce Drake (Sandy) of Saudi Arabia and a daughter-in-law Rebecca Vaughn of Homewood.
Mrs. Vaughn was born in Chicago, Ilinois on July 1, 1922 to Margaret and Claude Drake. As a teenager she moved with her family to Miami, Florida. There she attended the University of Miami where she graduated Cum Laude in 1943 with a B.A. in Spanish and Music. At the University she was also distinguished as the first female band member where she played clarinet. She received her Master s Degree in Counseling and Guidance from Samford University in 1970.
During World War II, Mrs. Vaughn was commissioned as an officer (Lieutenant) in the Navy where she served in Washington D.C. in the Top Secret Communications Unit which participated in breaking the German code. She was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Miami where she met her future husband, Carroll and they were married October 14, 1948.
The Vaughn s moved to Birmingham in 1957 where she taught high school for many years and retired from the Jefferson County system in 1982. After retirement she stayed active and worked as an Editorial Assistant for the Women s Missionary Union. She was also a past president of the Forthian Literary Club. She was a long time member of Highlands United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held on ______, ______ __ at Southern Heritage (Highway 119). Visitation will be at _____ , a chapel service at ______ followed by a graveside prayer. The Reverend David Carboni, Senior Pastor of Highlands United Methodist Church will be officiating.
Enlisted in the Air Corps Reserves Feb 1, 1943 im Miami, FL. At the time he was a Laundry Maintenance Mechanic.
Graduated from the University of Miami in 1949.
