Hart Family - Ourfolk
was among the first to settle in Berkeley Co., Va. He obtained 'tomahawk
rights' and build a cabin near the spring on Cabin Run in about 1730.
The original settler's were mostly Germans from Lancaster Co., Penn. - so
Thomas may have also come from there.
For a time the village bore the name 'Pack Horse Ford', signifying the
crossing of the packhorses over the Cohongorooton (Potomac), leading
to the Old Pack Horse Road. The village was named Mecklenburg in 1762 -
becoming the oldest town in the state of West Virginia.
Later the town was given the name Shepherdstown in honor of it's
founder Thomas SHEPHARD - in 1798.
Thomas HART was granted 5 1/2 acres on Cabin Run in 1790.
We have no record yet that John HART was the son of Thomas - but
we are supposing it is true since they seem to be the only Harts
living in the area at the time.
The Virginia Tax Records of 1782 show four Harts living in Berkeley Co.,
Va. - Thomas HART, Thomas HART, Jr, James HART and John HART.
Thomas's will was administered in 1796 by Andrew HART. Thomas HART, Jr.
was a witness.

My mother was a descendant of Deacon Stephen Hart of England and Farmington CT who had many descendants named Thomas. I notice in your 'Our Folk - Hart family' web site. I see that you have come to a dead end with your Thomas Hart, b. 1710. Have you looked at the descendants of Deacon to see if there was a Thomas born that year, 1710? In my Hart line I have a Thomas born in 1714.
I descend from both Deacon Stephen Hart and your John Bumpus, son of Edouad Bompasse who arrived on the Fortune in 1621, first ship after the Mayflower. He was known as Edward Bumpas in the Colonies.
