He attended the one-room country school through sec-
ond grade. From third grade through high school, he attended Mt. Pleasant School, graduating in 1963. He entered
Iowa State University, Ames, IA, that fall and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer in 1968.
Rob met Carolyn Farr in
1964 at ISU, marrying in 1966. His first job after graduation was as a Welding Engineer for the Trane Company in La
Crosse, WI. Their children are Michael Charles 1970 (m. in 2004 to Mily Patricia Villar n 1973), their daughter Angelina
Emily 2005; and Angela Kristin 1973.
In 1975 they moved to Roseville, IL, to farm as his father (Don Lawrence) wanted
to retire. They farmed the original farm that had been purchased by his great-great-grandfather (John Young) in 1845.
In 1977 Rob and Carolyn purchased a nearby 120-acre farm of their own. To help during difficult farming years,

added work as a Welding Engineer for Butler Manufacturing. He also chaired a national committee for the American
Welding Society. Rob retired from farming in 2014.
