Stokesay Castle date from the period
immediately following the Norman
Conquest. William the Conqueror
installed Roger Montgomery as earl of Shrewsbury, and he in turn granted
Stokesay to one of his retainers, Roger de Lacy.

The Say family were tenants of Stokesay until the death of Walter de Lacy in 1240,
