He fought through the Mexican War with an Indiana Company. He was one of the pioneer railroad conductors, starting in about 1850.
He worked as a Conductor for th old Peru Railroad, later known as the L. E. & W. for 25 years.
He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. W. Gladden.
