'On September 23, 1858, a friend of the Lawson family, Miss Melinda Vandervoort, visited the King home. Melinda, who lived in Sidney Township near Trenton, was twenty years of age, very pretty, and had been spending a few days with Sarah's parents. King soon began a secret correspondence with Miss Garrett of Murray Township, who was a patient of his. Later, on Sept. 23, King began his famous acquaintance with Melinda Vandervoort (also a patient) of Sidney in Hastings County. She is described as a young lady of 20 years, well educated and coquettish. Their letters are said to have been quite inappropriate for a married man, and Vandervoort even sent him her photograph.'
