The family stories are that he left Kentucky to escape threats on his life as the result of a murder trial in which he testified for the prosecution. He told me about his adventures running a still with his father-in-law in Indiana in Brown County. It was the terrible time of the depression and they were nearly starving working as share croppers.
The still helped them survive. Grandpa told me about one of his favorite customers, a gentleman from the 'city' who came to visit his cousin on the next ridge. He came over and purchased moonshine, visited with the family and were well liked by my grandparents. Grandpa told me that the gentleman would at times have supper or a cup of coffee with them. He was fond of their daughter (my mother) Kathleen who was very small for her age, he bounced her on his knee and played with her. Until the day shedied, my mother would become very irritated with me when I reminded her that she was a 'Dillinger Babe,' for the 'gentleman' was John Dillinger! And while every lawman in the nation was looking for him, he and my mother were playing in the kitchen!
