Peter M allory signed the planter's covenant at New Haven, C onn., 1644. The name is v ariously spelled in the early reco rds ther as Mallery, Malery, Mallary, Malar y, Mallorye, Mal lory and Malory, but in later years it most frequently appe ars as 'Mallory'. The wife of Peter Mallory united with th e first church of N ew Haven in 1633. On Jan. 2, 1687, Peter Mallery of New Haven, planter, give s land to his son Pete r, 'whereoff I the said Pater Mallary with Mary my wife hav e hereunto put our hands and seal', both signing by mark, h is mark cons isting of his initials P. His home lot and most of his land was near the Milfor d town line at a place commonly called West Side Farms, no w West Haven, in the town of Orange. The deed to his son Jo hn, dated March 25, 1687, was of 'land liei ng within New Ha ven township on the west river at the West farms, containin g one acre and half, bounded by the highway that runneth fr om the Oyster poin t on the north, on the East by land of Jo hn clark, on the south by land belon ging to my son Thomas M allery, on the west by a path that runneth between it and m y other land whereon I dwell'. New Haven land records, vo l. 1, p. 33 9 That he was a large land owner is evidence d by numerous deeds on record i n vol. 1. He repeatedly gave land to his sons John, Peter and Thomas. He al so gave la nd 'by way of portion in part with my loving daughter Rebec ca Bun nell, to my loving soon-in-law Benjamin Bunnell, 'dat ed July 2, 1684, and to his 'daughter-in-law Mary Mallery w idow, relict of Thomas Mallery, my son lat ely deceased, *** during the nonage of her son Thomas' with the proviso tha t if he died before he is twenty-one, then it shall go to h er son Daniel at la wful age, and if he die then to her so n Aaron, and if they three all die then 'it be and remain un to my said daughter, ***Signed with consent of my son Pet e r Jr.' april 28, 1691.
On August 30, 1697, he deeded all his 'estate undisp osed of ***moveable, real or personal, to his son Peter Husbandma n and son J ohn cordwainer' in consideration of life support . Vol. 1, p. 729 this deed and one or two others about th e same date are signed by a simple P instead of P.M., his u sual mark. He was undoubtedly in feeble health and perhap s had been feeble for many years. In the County Court Reco rds, vol.1, p. 45, Move . 8, 1671, we find 'This court upo n ye allegations p(r)sented on behalf of Pe ter Mallory Sen( r) for freedom from training doth free him from ye sd servi ce.' He died after Aug 30, 1697, when he disposed of the b alance of his prop erty, and before November 24, 1697, whe n he disposed of the balance of his pr operty, and before No vember 24, 1701, when John Malary conveys to John Smith 'la nd belonging to y(e) heirs of Thomas Malary***leading dow n to y(e) dwell ing house formerly belonging to Peter Malar y my deceased father.'
