was a seaman and captain. Ensign and later Captain of the 9th Conn. Militia.

He was an ardent patiot, who took up arms for his country at the beginning of the revolution and
contunied in active serrvice during most of the conflict. He was soon promoted to a lieutenant of the Coast Gard, and while serving in this capacity he was captured by the Tories, March 14, 1777, and taken to New Lots, Long Island, a part of the present city of Brooklyn; where record of his is found under the date of Augst 11, 1778. His release took place Jan 31, 1779.

In spite of this harrowing experience he rejoined the army and in 1781 was at West Point, NY, serving as lieutenant under Col. Samuel Canfield.

Jeremiah Eells was a charter member of the Somerset Lodge, No 34, of the Free and Accepted Masons of Norwich, Conn. in 1795
