According to the death registration Martin Seley died November 30th, 1894 in Rawden Twp. At
the time he was living with his daughter Charlotte and son-in-law in Stirling as confirmed in the
nearest census. No documentation has come to light to indicate where he is buried nor is his
name in cemeteries in Hastings County. Martin s wife Irena is buried in Ridge Road Pioneer
Cemetery and there is a tombstone containing her name that references her as Marten's wife.
This cemetery contains other Seeley/Seley s and is located in a corner of what used to be
Martin s farm. There is a foot stone inscribed with the initials 'M S' in the cemetery. The stone
is situated with other pieces of stone that have been grouped together in a corner of the cemetery
hence the exact location of the individual with these initials is unknown and none of the
tombstones have names beginning with the letters M and S. These facts lead to a supposition that Martin may be buried in Ridge Road Cemetery. Perhaps the intent was to erect a tombstone later but one was not commissioned due to cost or for other reasons. Certainly the seven off-spring where alive at the time of Martin's death which begs the question.
The Seley family can be found in the Rawdon Assessment Roll of 1842 with Martin Seley owning 200 acres located at Concession 1 Lot 7. In the following years, a cemetery and a sawmill were established on his land. Martin was a land wheeler and dealer with abstract land documents showing numerous transactions for this Lot and Lot 6 of Concession 2. He readily sold for a family price , sections, and small acreages to his children. In 1866, he suffered a devastating fire to his sawmill with damages costing $1800, which only $600 was covered by insurance.
Martin lost one small son at the tender age of 5 months in 1868 and his wife at the young age of
47 in 1872. He remained on his land until 1891, then sold the remainder to his youngest son
William. Martin then moved in with his daughter Charlotte and her husband until his death in
1894.
