-- James --
James was a Private in the 47th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

In a petition by his brother Abram Hart dated 7 Feb 1863 and filed in Peoria, praying for the appointment of an administrator, James was described as 'leaving no one as his widow and no one as his heirs at law'.

Lenox K. Gooding was appointed guardian of James Hart at age 12 years on Feb 27th, 1847.

James: Black Sheep in Family?

James was probably not one of the black sheep of our family history.
This article was reproduced in Prairie Roots - Winter 1987 (page 15):

'Oct 8, 1864 - James Hart of Peoria, who was hired out to go to war
for William Connell, a drafted man, was shot by a sentry at
Camp Butler, Springfield, when he tried to desert.
Three other substitutes were shot also the same night when they tried to flee the camp.
They were professional soldiers who had developed a profitible racket out of selling themselves as
substitiutes for conscripted men at $1,000 for the duration of the war.
After entering the service and collecting the money they deserted and hired out again under new names.'

However, our information shows that our James Hart died prior to this incident, (Abram petitioned for his estate in 1863) and the Histgory of McClean Co., Illinois verifies that he died i the civil war from disease..
The 1850 Peoria Census shows another James Hart, born in 1831(3 years 'older and wiser' than our James),
probably the brother of Adaline Hart (born 1819), who may have been the 'black sheep'
of some other family.
