Flora was one of many children from the Dubuque, Iowa area. Her father, a shoe salesman and later a shoe store owner, was apparently from the Alsace-Lorraine region. Even though the name appears to be of French origin, he considered himself to be from Germany and pronounced the name 'Mitchell'.
