Charles was born on his fathers farm in Monroe County, New York State,and lived at home until his 17th year when he started into the world tobuild for himself a home and a character. He worked as a farm hand forsome years, then learned the trade of wagon maker, which he followeduntil 1844, in Monroe County New York, when he lost by fire, his wholeproperty, the product of 20 years of toil. Soon after this loss heemigrated to Lorain County Ohio where by industry and prudence he soonwas able to purchase a farm, and from this time on was a farmer.

In New York Mr. Spooner was a captain in the state militia, in Ohio,often held the office of school trustee and other trusts, he wasinfluential in politics, and as an old WHIG,and as a Republican, he wasfrequently a delegate to state conventions

In 1865 Mr. Spooner moved to Adrian Michigan where in 1865 he was stillliving in a green old age, in the enjoyment of the gatherings of a lifeof industry and frugality.
