Lemuel learned the trades of painter and chair maker but soon afterattaining his majority, on the solicitiation of his uncle, ThomasSpooner, he gave up work at those trades and returned to the old home ofhis Grandfather, where he afterwards lived as a farmer and looking afterthe comforts of his uncle and Aunts who lived out their lives unmarried,on the old homestead. This property , Lemuel inherited on the death ofhis Uncle and retained possession of it until 1855 when he sold it to Mr.Dillingham. The sale was made with the expectation of purchasing avillage home in Fairhaven Massachusetts, and the hope of passing atranquil old age with his wife in the enjoyment of the inheritance, andwhat had been gathered by a life offrugality and industry. But a fewweeks after the sale of the farm, and before he had taken a permanentresidence, he was drowned by falling off the Fairhaven dock.
