-- Seth --
Seth Spooner was born in Dartmouth, that part of the township, nowAcushnet, and died in the same town, being the first person laid in theLong Plain grave yard. He learned the weaver's trade, and lived on hisfather's place, which he inherited, until by standing surety for hisbrother-in-law, Nathaniel Sheperd, he lost his homestead. He then, bydeed dated June 25, 1741, purchased a farm at the Long Plain (inAcushnet) from Joseph Taber, Jr., with one acre only of cleared land. Here he lived in a log house until late in life, when he was taken intothe family of his grandson, Hon. Alden Spooner, who built on the samesite. He was, during his later years, insane and sometimes violentlyso. According to tradition, he was of an enterprising and adventurousdisposition, very fond of trading and often losing property by thispropensity.

He was a man of usefulness and highly esteemed by his townsmen. Heserved many years in various Town fices.
